What do I need to know about Expirations in the Envoy platform?
The Envoy platform tracks all relevant expiration dates for your immigration legal documents and status. When an expiration is approaching, or if it was recently updated, you will be notified.
Expirations in your account may or may not impact your current status. If you receive an expiration notification, please log into your Envoy account to review. If you have any questions, please contact the legal team in your Communication Center.
General Expiration Information:
Click the Expiration for more information:
You are responsible for ensuring that your passport remains valid. The legal team generally recommends renewing your passport at least 6 months prior to expiration, however it is best to renew it as soon as possible.
After your passport has been renewed, please update the Identification section of your Account profile, where you will be prompted to upload a scanned copy of the biographical page of the renewed document.
Visa Stamp Renewal Information
A valid visa stamp of your current status is required for entering the U.S. Please know that if you are currently inside the U.S. and do not have international travel plans, this date does not impact your work authorization.
You should always notify the legal team of any international travel plans as soon as possible. Please alert the team in your Communication Center with details on where and when you will travel, as well as the purpose of your trip. They can then advise on your travel as well as determine if any travel will impact the strategy of any active or ongoing casework.
After you have renewed your visa stamp, please update the Visa Status section of your Account profile, where you can update the expiration date and provide a scan of the new visa stamp.
The CBP I-94 Arrival/Departure Record is generally updated each time you enter the U.S., and you should usually be issued a new CBP I-94 upon re-entry.*
If an application has been approved with USCIS since you last entered the U.S., then you may have a different document controlling your status, such as a recent Approval Notice. This expiration date may or may not impact your current status, so please contact the legal team in your Communication Center if you have any questions or concerns.
Does this date appear incorrect in your Envoy account?
You should always keep your I-94 updated within the Envoy platform so that the legal team can continue to track all relevant status expirations. The I-94 Travel Log is a great place to keep this information up to date!
*If you are travelling from Canada or Mexico on a quick trip, you may not be re-issued an I-94. Please ensure you notify the legal team of ALL international travel so that they can advise you on these instances when necessary.
An I-797 Approval Notice is issued when USCIS approves a case sent to them for processing. If you have an updated Approval Notice for your current status, you can update the expiration date and provide the document in your Account profile.
To renew: An extension case is typically needed to renew the I-797, however there may be other options.
If the legal team has filed an extension on you or your employer’s behalf, then they will be sure to update any associated expiration dates after the case is approved.
The I-129S is endorsed by the Consular Officer after an L-1 Blanket application has been approved under Consular Processing. The Endorsed I-129S is evidence of the approval at the consulate, and you can follow the guidance in our L-1 Blanket FAQs here on providing this document to the legal team: https://www.envoyglobal.com/faq-employee-users/l-1-blanket-faqs/#case-completion
If the legal team has prepared a new L-1 Blanket (Outside) case, you should upload your updated approval documents to the case’s Supporting Documents after you have completed Consular Processing and re-entered the U.S. The legal team will typically request that you upload the Endorsed I-129S, new Visa Stamp, and new CBP I-94 to confirm your current status. For more information on completing this: https://www.envoyglobal.com/faq-employee-users/l-1-blanket-faqs/#case-completion
PED stands for Petition Expiration Date. This date should reflect the expiration date on your I-797 Approval Notice. If you applied for a L-1 Blanket visa, this expiration date would be listed on the Endorsed I-129S you received from the U.S. Consulate. You can find more information on extending the L-1 Blanket here: https://www.envoyglobal.com/faq-employee-users/l-1-blanket-faqs/
The I-765, Employment Authorization Document (EAD), provides work authorization for qualifying individuals, often when their visa status does not include work authorization. If you or your dependent(s) have an updated EAD card, you can update the expiration date and provide the document in your Account profile. If you or your dependents solely rely on the EAD card for work authorization, then it must remain valid to continue working.* It is best to file any I-765 extensions as soon as possible. If the legal team has filed an extension on your behalf, then they will be sure to update any associated expiration dates after the case is approved.
To renew:
Depending on how an individual qualifies for the EAD, it can be renewed in different ways:
*Some individuals may benefit from an automatic 180-day extension of the EAD after it expires. Please post to the legal team in your Communication Center so they can further advise on any questions about individual’s ability to continue working.
I-131 for Travel Authorization
The I-131 can be filed on different bases; please review the below as it best relates to your basis of filing.
I-131 Advance Parole
The I-131 Advance Parole is typically filed for travel authorization when an I-485 application for the green card is pending with USCIS. For more information on this: https://www.envoyglobal.com/faq-employee-users/ead-ap-faqs/
If you or your dependent(s) have an updated Advance Parole Document or EAD/AP Combo Card, you can update the expiration date and provide the document in your Account profile.
IMPORTANT: While the I-131 is pending with USCIS, international travel will result in abandonment and denial of the application. International travel could also impact a pending I-485 case, so always be sure to notify the legal team of any international travel plans in your Communication Center. For more information on this: https://www.envoyglobal.com/faq-employee-users/ead-ap-faqs/#travel-advisory
If the legal team has filed an extension on your behalf, then they will be sure to update any associated expiration dates after the case is approved.
I-131 for Re-entry Permit
The I-131 for re-entry is needed when individuals on legal permanent resident status (green card holders) need to leave the U.S. for more than a year or need to take up residence abroad, but they do not want to abandon their status. If you will be outside of the U.S. upon the expiration of this document, you will likely need to renew it. Please contact the legal team in your Communication Center if you have any questions on renewal.
Note that if you are filing the I-131 for a re-entry Permit, you must be physically present in the U.S. at the time of filing and you may travel after it is filed.
You should always work with the legal team to coordinate your travel plans. As part of the I-131 filing for the Re-entry Permit, you must attend the Biometrics appointment inside the U.S. when scheduled. The appointment is generally scheduled approximately 60 days from the case filing date, and you will get a Biometrics Appointment Notice ahead of time to let you know the exact date and time of the appointment.
The I-20 is issued by your university’s DSO. It reflects the validity period of your F-1 status and includes any authorized periods of employment, whether CPT or OPT.
If you have an updated I-20, you can update the expiration date and provide the document in your Account profile.
The DS-2019 is issued by your J-1 program sponsor and will reflect the period of time in which you may remain in the U.S. in J-1 status.
If you have an updated DS-2019, you can update the expiration date and provide the document in your Account profile.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
CPT is authorized employment by your school while you are in F-1 status. The appropriate expiration date will be listed on your I-20.
If you have an updated CPT document, you can update the expiration date and provide the document in your Account profile.
Some family-based applications for the green card result in a conditional green card of two years. When it is time to renew that green card, applicants can file the I-751 to remove the conditions of the two-year green card to obtain a green card with a 10-year validity period.
Please reach out to Envoy Customer Experience if you have questions about next steps.
The green card is generally valid for a 10-year period after it is issued. An I-90 filing is generally needed to extend the green card. Please contact Envoy Customer Experience if you have any questions.
